To elaborate a little more on the ad-supported mobile software.... this model works best in software which uses internet connectivity as part of its normal functionality (e.g. the amazeGPS and  Mesa Info Booth examples given in the article) as the ads are usually have to be downloaded from the net. It is not always so popular yet in games and apps which do not require connectivity except to download ads, although that will probably change as always-on/cheap internet connections from phones become the norm.
