To elaborate a little more on the ad-supported mobile software.... this model works best in software which uses internet connectivity as part of its normal functionality (e.g. the amazeGPS and Mesa Info Booth examples given in the article) as the ads are usually have to be downloaded from the net. It is not always so popular yet in games and apps which do not require connectivity except to download ads, although that will probably change as always-on/cheap internet connections from phones become the norm. In the meantime though, the completely free no-ad supported games appear the most popular.

Re: Mobile Fun - Want to know how fast you can lose a customer

1. Ok.

2. Maybe you didn't but it doesn't change how crappy your customer service was and that it cost me money to wait on the line unnecessarily. As a potential customer I shouldn't be made to feel that way regardless of my purchase intentions. What you should be taking away from this is, the possibility that your customer service is losing you customers, and not finding a way to put the blame on me.

3. This statement shows your very ignorance of online shopping. There are many online stores that provide the same products as Amazon and it is not my fault you choose to not look for them. Many online retailers offer a far greater level of service. For example Play.com offers many of Amazon's core products and they ship much faster with no additional cost. Often their prices are better too.

I appreciate your opinions and feedback on the Google Shopping comment but I think you really didn't do your company a favour by representing yourself this way and responding as you did.

Cheers

Re: Mobile Fun - Want to know how fast you can lose a customer

1. froogle is free!!!
2. most likey not in MF's intrest to sell a client 5/6 phones in one go. We're excited about offering our widgets and tools as resources for bloggers, entrepreneurs, and startup enthusiasts. Our main goal is making the site a welcoming community for people to come together and discuss startups and the industry as well as participate in interesting and fun extras like the Startup Exchange!

Re: What is the value of Docstoc?

Svetlana

Since I agree with everything you said I am just going to jump to the bottom
and make a comment about this statement which I agree with as well.. Boring
eh? ;)

"But if there's one thing I know, it's that we are obviously out of
interesting ideas already and all the new products seem to be based on
something already available but improved and often it is hard to understand
the value of this or that service."

For this generation of the Internet I think we are now hitting a wall as you
point out. I believe Internet-based startups that are cashflow positive
should be looking at consolidating their features and tweaking, consider
merging with complimentary services and expanding internationally into
different languages.

Additionally I think it could be said that we are in a sort of pseudo-Web
2.5 which is mobile innovation. Supporting this is the massive influx of
capital into mobile startups which are growing rapidly with the main areas
of innovation around communication (obviously) and location-based services.

This generation of development won't be over until the business men move in
and by grouping these startups create large viable firms with long-term
development and innovation prospects.

PS. I love our chats, as I have lots of respect for your views. One of these
days we should have a coffee over Skype.

Re: What is the value of Docstoc?

Roger,

Yes, it is pretty obvious that this niche is a very small one - after all,
people really embed documents into posts only occasionally. I have actually
embedded docs a couple of times - once I wanted to include original research
(pdf) that was the basis of a post and second time was very recently when I
wanted to embed a spreadsheet with multiple figures of my own calculations
in case someone wanted to take a look at them.

But the niche is truly small. And while I like the documents backup service
Docstoc has recently launched, I will probably not use it myself until it
gets more advanced features (for example, for me to only use it from home
where I have unlimited internet plan and never from the office where we pay
way too much per GB).

But if there's one thing I know, it's that we are obviously out of
interesting ideas already and all the new products seem to be based on
something already available but improved and often it is hard to understand
the value of this or that service.

Re: What is the value of Docstoc?

Hi Svetlana

Yeah I know I hear you and there are a few competitors that allow embedding
too. I think it is great, but that is pretty darn niche. I thought for a
long time I would use one of these services but I just never write docs for
my blog and in all fairness I haven't see you embed so it can't be that
needed a service or am I wrong?

Is there a future for them, probably but the product where it is I think is
pretty weak.

Re: What is the value of Docstoc?

Hm, actually there's a way in which I already use Docstoc from time to time - they have functionality to embed any document in a blog post, it is particularly useful to me as a blogger.

Re: SocialWebTV, Feedly, FriendFeed, Webjam and more…

Hi Marcus

Thanks for dropping by, and absolutely the 'social networking aspect' is a valuable advantage. I have found just using Disqus has impacted how many comments I get so I would imagine being part of a larger community like Webjam could have an even more impressive impact.

Love what you guys are doing, keep up the good work!

Re: SocialWebTV, Feedly, FriendFeed, Webjam and more…

Thanks for the mention buddy!

Like you say, we'd love it if you were to move over to Webjam or at least develop some kind of presence with us but can certainly understand why you are happy with Wordpress and indeed we're not looking to compete on blogging functionalities since that's certainly not our forte.

One advantage that we do have for publishers is the social networking aspect. We've seen that once a blogger does establish a little network on Webjam, the level of interaction (i.e. number of comments/cross-links) on their blog is actually much higher than for a standalone blog which isn't able to take advantage of the social graph that exists around it.

./m

Re: The social media bloggers you read the most?

Solid thanks.

Re: The social media bloggers you read the most?

Thanks Jeff. Regarding your readership question, although Duncan Riley is vehemently against some of the services they can be good for speculative research if you are curious.

Aiderss.com
Compete.com
Alexa.com

If you combine them it should give you some idea of the size of their readership.
